What are VOCs, Anyway?
In some of our previous blogs, we’ve mentioned Sherwin-Williams’ line of low and no VOC paints. Beyond that, you’ve probably seen a number of well-known paint brands touting their new paint formulas with reduced amounts of VOCs. But just what are they, and why are paint distributors and consumers alike so ready to get rid of them?
VOCs are found in many household liquids and solids, like cleaning supplies and (of course) interior paint. The acronym VOC stands for “volatile organic compounds,” meaning that these chemicals are emitted from the source as gases after they are applied. The EPA has found that the level of VOCs found in the air is often higher inside a home than outside because of reduced ventilation.
So, if these compounds are found in items that everyone has in their homes–nail polish, spot treatments, even the refrigerant from the AC–why are companies trying so hard to get rid of them? When they’re found in low concentrations, they won’t cause many issues, but when they have a significant presence–like when you’re painting your home–they can be detrimental to your health.
Generally speaking, VOCs are an annoyance. For most homeowners, they can cause headaches, eye irritation, throat soreness, and nausea. Usually, with due care and the proper ventilation after painting, these are the majority of the issues that can arise. However, in certain situations, prolonged exposure to high amounts of VOCs have been shown to cause cancer. Currently, regulations on paint production help to limit the concentration of VOCs found, but it’s always best to be safe.
