This Summer, Protect Your Drywall from Humidity
The summer is definitely on its way here in Florida, and as the sun starts to shine brighter and the days get longer, the humidity also starts to make its way in. Beyond the quick thunderstorms that are preparing to grace most of our afternoons, moisture hangs heavily in the air, sticking to our skin and hair and making its way inside our homes. Not only is this moisture often annoying, it can also be quite harmful.
As you prepare yourself for swimsuit season, don’t forget to prepare your home for the increased humidity. From the Orlando drywall repair contractors at New Ceilings, here are a few ways to protect your drywall:
- Use the right primer when you’re painting. Primers for your home’s exterior aren’t made the same as primers for the interior. Even further still, different interior primers are designed for rooms with different levels of humidity–for example, you’d need more protection from humidity in the bathroom than you would in the bedroom. Make sure you take your time in selecting the right primers for the area you’re painting.
- Repair damage when it happens–even if it looks small. Any cracks, dents, and imperfections in your walls can make it easier for humidity to seep between the cracks, leaving you exposed to mold and mildew growth. Every so often, give your home an all-over check for any damages; at the first sign of imperfections, make sure you get it patched up.
- Invest in a good dehumidifier. Not only will a dehumidifier make you more comfortable in your home, it’ll also keep your drywall nicely aired out. From the inside out, you’ll be better able to prevent mold before it happens. Put your dehumidifier in an area that is vulnerable to humidity, like an entryway with a lot of windows or near the bathroom.
Many of the steps you can take to keep your home dry and well-maintained occur during your painting or repair projects.
