It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…Can I Paint my House?
If you haven’t noticed by now, Central Florida’s rainy season is in full effect. Throughout the month of June, we’ve seen thunderstorms roll across the region, some lasting for only three or four minutes, others bringing the drizzle through the entire afternoon. Although the majority of our afternoon thunderstorms have been fairly short thus far, they have left many homeowners wondering: how am I supposed to paint my home’s exterior?
The Orlando painting team at New Ceilings has taken care of a plethora of exterior painting projects in all kinds of weather. Here are a few questions to ask when assessing whether or not your home is ready to be painted:
- Is the temperature right to let your paint dry properly? This may not be the first point to come to mind, but often after a storm, the sun’s rays are magnified and the air becomes far too humid to let your exterior paint dry without running and streaking. Avoid painting right after a storm; give the air a few hours to cool down, or better still, wait till the next morning.
- Are your wall’s surfaces still wet? Even a few droplets of water count as wet. Any remaining moisture on the surface will keep your paint from adhering to the walls. Generally speaking, a good gauge of whether you should prepare to paint is checking whether your sidewalks are still dark with moisture. If they are, hold off for a few hours.
- If they’re not wet, inspect further. As you well know, moisture has a nasty habit of hiding in creases and crevices. Check on any cracks in the walls, grooves by windows and in siding for additional moisture. If you don’t go over your home with a fine-toothed comb, you could potentially release stored up water with your brush, ruining your initial coat of paint.
