Your Quick and Easy Summer Drywall Checklist

The summer is officially here in Central Florida, and homeowners around the state are beginning to enjoy their vacations in the sun. With the extra relaxation and free time you may find you have over the next few months, now is the perfect time to get a little house cleaning and maintenance done, and no part of your home deserves more TLC than your drywall.

The Orlando drywall repair contractors at New Ceilings encourage all homeowners to perform regular maintenance on your drywall to help prevent major costly repairs. These tasks are simple enough that the kids can help now that they’re out of school for the season. Here are three items to mark off your checklist to keep your walls looking brand new:

  • Eliminate the dirt and grime. Smudges and smears naturally build up on your walls over time from a cumulation of dirty hands, rogue projectiles, rambunctious pets and so on. While this may not seem like a big problem, leaving that dirt to sink in over the years can allow it to settle and prevent you from achieving a beautiful paint job in the future. Use a gentle cleaning solution, warm water, and a rag to wipe away stains.
  • Fill in old nail holes. If you’ve recently moved around or gotten rid of some of your wall hangings, there’s a good chance you’re left with nothing more but a hole in the wall. While these aren’t the most noticeable and often don’t lead to problems, it’s a good idea to get rid of them when you notice them. Fill in nail holes with a small bit of putty, and when it’s smooth and dry, paint over it with your color matched interior paint.
  • Prevent potential problems. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and the very same applies to your drywall. Look for areas that may be vulnerable to drywall damage–door handles, kids’ rooms, exposed corners–and take steps to keep them protected. You can install doorknob guards on your walls and use higher gloss paint in high-traffic areas to make them easier to clean.

Nothing shows your pride in your home more than your care and maintenance for it, and this summer is the best time to get a head start. By completing these tasks once every few months, you’ll probably find you don’t have much damage to worry about.
