Paint Any Surface with These Professional Tips
If you’ve been keeping up with our Facebook page, by now you should be a DIY expert. Even if you’re not following us on social media, as a homeowner, there are a number of things you learn to do on your own around the house. Hanging up pictures, tightening leaky faucets, replacing showerheads and creaky doorknobs are all under your belt. There’s a good chance that some painting tasks are already in your repertoire, as well.
However, you may not have known that it takes a different technique to paint different types of surfaces. You wouldn’t use the same product for wood paneling as you would for textured drywall or beadboard. How can you make sure your selected color goes on smoothly and evenly? To help you whenever you decide to take on a weekend warrior project of your own, the experts on painting in Orlando at New Ceilings have this handy guide prepared for you:
- Metal. While this isn’t the most common material for walls or decks by any means, there will probably come a time when you need to refurbish a chair or perhaps the railings around your deck. To get started, you’ll want to completely clean and scrub off any flakes and rust from the surface of the metal. Next, you’ll want to prime the area, but you can skip this step if you choose a paint with rust inhibitors. Make sure to use light, even coats to help prevent running and drips.
- Crown Molding. Before you paint, as with most surfaces, it’s important that you ensure there are no dents or holes in your siding. Once you’re done with all the patchwork, you can begin to paint. While it’s better to get this step done before the molding goes up, you can always use painter’s tape to mask off the walls. You’ll get the best texture and coverage with a small roller.
- Wood. The wood used for wall paneling and for decks are different, as the deck’s material is usually left fairly raw beyond the usual pressure treatment. For paneling, you’ll want to sand down the surface after you fill up any holes but before you begin the painting process. If there are any gaps between the paneling and the wall, you’ll need to caulk those as well. Use a medium-nap roller and be careful to fill in the gaps without letting the paint drip or pool.
