How to Make Your House a Home for Life
Your house isn’t only the setting for your present; it should also be the scene of your future, a place where you and your family can grow and thrive for years to come. Even if you’re perfectly comfortable in your home at the present, you may find it lacking in conveniences as the years go by. As we age, certain everyday tasks become difficult or impossible to do without assistance. But there are measures you can take now to prepare for your future.
The team at New Ceilings wants you to love your home and thrive in it for years to come. According to the AARP, here are a few ways you can make your home accessible for the future:
- Widen the doorways. Lack of mobility is the most common disability in Americans aged 65 and over. As of 2014, over 10 million Americans reported using wheeled transportation devices (wheelchairs) on a daily basis. Wheelchairs usually need at least 36” clearance to pass through a doorway.
- Install handrails on both sides of the staircase. Stairs can pose a particular challenge for adults over 65. Make sure your stairs have handrails on either side to help you keep your balance as you climb. You might need to install handles in the bathrooms, as well.
- Make sure there’s adequate lighting. Vision tends to decline with age, as well. What serves as good lighting for you now might not cut it in 10 years or so. Make sure your house is bright and well-lit throughout, especially in places like bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Install cabinets that can be reached from lower heights. Even if you don’t need a wheelchair for mobility, reaching can become troublesome later in life. Install kitchen and bathroom cabinets that aren’t too much of a struggle to reach, perhaps just higher than eye level.
