Keep the “Dry” in Drywall During Spring Showers
This year, Florida’s winter has been particularly unpredictable. With a storm front rolling in and bringing 40-degree highs one week, and bright, dry, sunny days the next week, it can be difficult to know just what to prepare for. While many people love the ever-fluctuating nature of the Floridian seasons, it can make it difficult for Orlando drywall repair teams and homeowners alike to prepare for whatever weather comes their way.
At New Ceilings, we’ve seen the best of weather and the worst of weather, and we find that the Sunshine State doesn’t always live up to its name–between year-round humidity and surprise showers, you’ll have to deal with moisture more often than not. In that case, it’s a great idea to prepare for wet weather while we have a brief respite. Here are just a few steps you can take to keep your drywall dry:
- Improve your home’s drainage system. Especially in the case of a quick, heavy downpour, you may find that puddles stand around your home longer than they should. If you find that your paint is bubbling or your plaster seems powdery near the floor, your drywall has probably absorbed some of that standing water. Make sure the ground slopes away properly and drain water away from your home’s foundation.
- Control interior condensation. Often in winter and early spring, you may wake up to find that your home’s windows are fogged up with condensation. While this is ok every once in a while, especially after a significant temperature shift, you should make sure it’s not pouring in from the walls themselves. Keep all your rooms well ventilated and invest in extractor fans if the condition is serious.
- Keep a moisture meter handy. Every so often, here in Florida, it’s a good idea to check on the amount of moisture present in your walls. After all, it’s the problems you can’t see immediately–like mold and mildew–that can cause the greatest damage if left untouched. Your local hardware store likely offers a moisture meter for just that purpose. We recommend keeping one handy and making it part of your routine.
When it seems like even the meteorologists are playing a guessing game as to the week’s forecast, it’s best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Now is the best time for you to get your home wet-weather ready before the really big storms roll through.
