Feeling Grape with Sherwin-Williams’ Color of the Month

As always, Sherwin-Williams has presented homeowners with a stunning new color of the month, giving us a design challenge and a reward with one of the richest, most vibrant hues of the season. For February, our favorite paint partner has selected Mature Grape (SW 6286), a rich, juicy purple that reminds us of quiet evenings in with a book and a glass of wine. But for many, this color may come off somewhat problematic: how do you paint with purple?

As we’ve said before (and we’ll surely say again), this is the year to embrace a full, vivid color palette and to say goodbye to “plain” and “boring.” Painting with purple is far from impossible, and when pulled off correctly, can create an intriguing appealing space in any room. From Orlando’s interior painting team at New Ceilings, here are a few tips on popping with purple:

  • Use your selected shades in small bursts. We love purple just as much as you do, but dousing an entire room in it could come off clownish – not to mention it’ll shrink the room by a few sizes. Instead, use this lush color in smaller pops, like in a bookshelf or as a feature wall. To learn more about painting a feature wall with ease, check out our blog here.
  • Balance out this bright color with earthy neutrals. Sandy greys and beiges, as well as khakis and even olive tones will do well to anchor your color and not make it look too gaudy. Think linen curtains and grey cloth furniture. Remember, neutrals come in a host of tones, so they don’t have to be boring!
  • Pay close attention to your natural lighting. Using Mature Grape in a room with plenty of natural light will give it a fun, earthy, vivacious feeling; in darker rooms, it will lean toward intimacy and noir. Think about the room you’re using it in and make sure your purpose matches: a sultry look would work better in a study than a kitchen, and a brighter, earthier look works better in a large family living room than an intimate den.

Embracing all the colors of the rainbow has never been easier.
