How to Hang Artwork Without Damaging Your Drywall
We’ve all been there: you just brought home a brand new painting or wall sconce and you’re excited to display it in your home, but you’re just not quite sure how. You’ve heard that it’s important to find the wall stud to help things stay stable, but you don’t have a stud finder handy, and the “knock-and-listen” technique isn’t as reassuring as you would have hoped. What’s the next step?
There are a number of tools available to help you support your artwork and keep your drywall intact. Here are just a few options for you to try:
- Screw-in Plastic Anchors: These are the most popular anchors and are easily available at any hardware store. Screw-in anchors look like thicker screws and are simple to install. To set them in place, just screw them into your intended area with a Phillips head screwdriver, then drive your regular screw through the center – you don’t even need to find the stud! Attach a hook or a clip as usual.
- Expanding Plastic Sleeves. These sleeves work similarly to the screw-in anchors, providing more grip than your screws alone could do. To use these, you’ll first need to drill a hole that will snugly fit the sleeve, then tap the sleeve in with a hammer. Finish by inserting your screw as usual. Make sure you find the sleeves with expanding wings as they secure better to drywall than other materials.
- 3M Hooks and Hangers. For a completely non-invasive option, you can choose one of a wide variety of 3M’s wall hooks and hangers. While these usually don’t sit as flush as the other options, they do give you the option to easily remove the hook from the wall without damaging your paint or the drywall beneath.
No homeowner is a stranger to accidental drywall damage while trying to hang up a painting or a piece of artwork. Even the most seemingly foolproof options can come with their setbacks.
