A Room for Every Tone: Using Color to Define Your Space
As residents of Central Florida, most of us have had quite enough warmth in our lives–especially during this record-breaking summer–and so we tend to choose decor themes and accessories that remind us of the milder months. However, while cool colors can help make a room seem…well, cooler, there’s something to be said for using different tones to accentuate different areas of your home.
The painting team at New Ceilings, one of the most trusted painting companies in Orlando, has been a trusted partner of Sherwin-Williams for over 5 years, giving them access to beautiful paint and design ideas. Here are a few pointers about using color to define your space:
- Warm colors include reds, yellows, and beige tones, with greens and purples being the hybrids. These two blended colors lean toward the warm side when they have greater concentrations of red and yellow, versus blue and grey. Warm colors are eye-catching and stimulating, and would be perfect for areas of high traffic, like living and dining rooms. Try using a vibrant orange-red in a room with warm-toned furnishings for a lively look.
- Cool colors, on the other hand, are easy on the eyes and not overstimulating, making them perfect for areas of rest and relaxation. These tones, comprised mostly of blues and bluish-violets, can transform your bedroom or your study into a quiet place for contemplation. Try blending a light grey into your shade of choice to simulate a cool, beautiful sunrise.
- Black and white technically don’t fall on either side of the color wheel, as they represent all colors and the absence of color, respectively. However, they are very flexible and can take on some of the properties of the shades they’re used with. Paint with black and white sparingly, using them more for depth and dimension.
Most interior decorators stick to the “80/20” rule as a guideline–use neutrals through 80% of the room and select colors for accents across the other 20%. However, with professional planning, you can be as vibrant as you want and still present your family and your guests with a chic, modern living space.
