A Glimpse at the Life of a Popcorn Ceiling
Popcorn ceilings were all the rage about 50 years ago. When this texture arrived on the scene, it offered contractors a novel way to add fire resistance to the home and to help reduce the appearance of blemishes and construction errors. From its inception well through the 80s, popcorn ceilings were ubiquitous, the remnants of which can still be seen in many homes across the country.
While popcorn ceilings can remain intact for decades with the proper care, many of them do show the wear and tear that comes with their life cycles. Here’s a brief glimpse into the life of a popcorn ceiling:
- Application. Application of popcorn texture is an inexpensive and simple process, which is one of the reasons why it was so popular to begin with. Contractors use a spray applicator to coat the ceiling with the lumpy texture, letting it settle into the familiar peaks and valleys you may have over your head.
- Aging. Most popcorn ceilings show signs of their age after a few years. One of the most commonly cited issues with older popcorn is that it becomes discolored after catching dust particles for so many years. Older popcorn also tends to get flaky, leaving you with ugly, raw edges. While it’s possible to clean, it’s hard to do so without knocking some of the texture away and creating unsightly bald spots.
- Coverup and Repair. Many homeowners attempt to cover up their aging popcorn ceilings by painting over them to mixed results. Without gentle cleaning, your paint won’t adhere to the surface. Furthermore, painting your popcorn means it will be much more difficult to remove in the future, should you change your mind. It is possible to patch and repair any bald spots with a patching kit, but exactly matching the texture and color is a very difficult task.
As you can see, popcorn ceilings don’t have the smoothest lifespan. Over time, they can create a number of annoyances for the average homeowner.
