4 Types of Specialized Drywall

SPECIALIZEDAs a conscientious homeowner, you know every feature of your house, even the secret nooks and crannies and the little quirks. When you think about your home, what are the first features that come to mind? Many of you probably envisioned your lighting features, your swimming pools, your back porches, or your upgraded kitchens. But what about your drywall?

Chances are, you don’t think of drywall as much more than a building block for the rest of your house, but in truth, it’s much more than that. Orlando drywall repair experts utilize a variety of types of drywall (or sheetrock) to help create the ideal surface for every room. Here are four of the most common types of specialized drywall:

  1. Quiet rock. As the name implies, quiet rock helps reduce noise levels inside the home. This special material, also known as sound board, is created with unique “viscoelastic polymers” that essentially turn sound vibrations into heat energy. This can be great for commercial buildings, or it can also be layered over thinner structures to help eliminate additional noise pollution.
  2. Type X. This futuristic-sounding type of sheetrock includes a specialized gypsum core that is resistant to fire. Effectively, if a fire breaks out in a building with type X sheetrock, the spread of the flames and smoke buildup will be significantly slowed, giving inhabitants more time to safely exit the premises as help arrives.
  3. Impact-resistant drywall, also known as high-abuse drywall, is also built with gypsum which increases the (you guessed it) impact resistance of the surface. This type of drywall is perfect for high-traffic locations that get a lot of wear and tear, like schools, hospitals, office corridors, churches, and so on.
  4. Green board is constructed with a special green paper backing that has a water-resistant coating. While this is a great material to use in bathrooms, shower stalls and tub backs need additional protection, requiring 100% waterproof sheetrock. Green board is also great for homes in locations that receive a great amount of rain and are susceptible to water damage.

If you didn’t know just how important the different types of drywall are, you’re not alone. Most homeowners don’t realize that there are a number of specialized varieties of sheetrock in their home, performing different functions to help keep them safe and protected.
